Matt Browning

Press release

The title of this exhibition “My Art” is revealing, as this show represents, with few exceptions, the scarce majority of what Matt Browning has been up to all these years. The exhibition records a period of ongoing work from 2011 until today. The story this summation tells is one of very slow movement, punctuated by frequent repetition and looping backwards. The trio of artworks in this exhibition can be carried in the hand of the person who made them. Each is unique, although some do not appear so. Wooden sculptures are carved from single blocks of Douglas fir and are cut in such a way that they collapse or unfold into grids of interlocking links. Such links never come apart. Here, one carving is displayed on a wall in a collapsed way, another is shown expanded. These are essentially the “same” artwork shown in different states. Each carving has motion to it, however inactive. Such motion can happen in real space but may just as well remain in one’s mind. Other carvings stand freely. These sculptures may also change but do so vertically, growing to twice in height. Two tables hold the other groups of sculptures. The first, handmade knifes that fold open and close, are pocketable tools or trompe l’oeils? The second, a crowd of cylinders, another question of sculpture asked by truncating empty glass bottles and then filling them with boiled down soda.
