30th Anniversary: A Center of Photography

Press release

In 2026, Fotografisk Center celebrates its thirtieth anniversary, marking the occasion with an exhibition designed to unfold the span of the photographic and camera-based medium, as well as how, over the years, the contemporary arts venue has served as a centre of photography featuring shows by many different artists and photographers.

The anniversary exhibition forms part of the contemporary arts venue 's current research project 'Documentary Art Photography' (supported by the New Carlsberg Foundation 2023‒2026) in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen, where Oscar Schönström, PhD fellow, takes an historical approach and examines developments of photographic exhibition venues in Denmark and Sweden since the 1980s.

Although both research and exhibition rest on an historical foundation, the exhibition seeks to emphasise links across chronology rather than tethering the works to their specific historical context. The exhibition seeks to create links between different times, types of photography, works, and photographers. The exhibition will therefore embrace the span of the photographic and camera-based medium. The exhibition will be unfolded via three themes based on various unique aspects of the photographic medium.

The exhibition is supported by the Danish Arts Foundation and Augustinus Fonden.
