As part of Various Others, JO VAN DE LOO hosts the Noah Klink gallery in a juxtaposition of new ink drawings and oil paintings by Andreas Chwatal alongside sculptures and a paperwork by Irina Jasnowski Pascual. Formally, the positions differ significantly: Pascual works with assemblage-like constructions made from lightweight industrial and packaging materials, cut into fragments, layered, and assembled using seemingly provisional connections. The sculptures, titled Volume, also function as viewing devices: they contain openings fitted with mirrors that redirect the viewer's gaze into the interior of the work and from there towards the ceiling of the exhibition space. In this way, a periscopic visual guidance emerges through which the spatial relationship shifts and the exhibition space itself becomes part of the work. A connecting element with Chwatal's images, which depict queer club, intimate, and everyday scenes, lies in their treatment of the gaze: the openly depicted male bodies are both desired and desiring; some of the figures actively return the viewer's gaze. As a result, the "gaze" is destabilised as a one-sided, controlling act and instead appears as a reciprocal perception shared across space and time. Text: Sabine Weingartner (2026)
