Press release
Gathering is thrilled to announce Tai Shani’s second solo exhibition with Gathering, Cardinal. The exhibition will encompass both of the gallery floors, showcasing a new body of gem-like paintings and a multi-layered installation.
The upstairs space evokes a regal throne room, deep purple covers the window planes, and both the gallery walls and the full-length carpet covering the floor are crimson red.
Upon descending downstairs, the viewer is enveloped by velvety darkness. In the midst of it, there is a wall obstructing further access. In the wall there is, a brick archway with a wood scenic door in the middle, with a small peep hole allowing for witnessing the intricate animated landscape-installation behind the doorway, accompanied by a Requiem composed by Maxwell Sterling. The installation, Epilogues, akin to a tableau vivant, references Marcel Duchamp’s last masterpiece Étant donnés: 1. La chute d’eau, 2. Le gaz d’éclairage (1946–1966), a multi-dimensional surreal diorama, where the viewer takes up the role of a voyeur.
