Sommeratelier: Constanza Meléndez Tohá

Artists

Constanza Meléndez Tohá

Press release

The now-traditional »Summer Studio« format allows locally active artists to use the Kunstraum München as a workspace during its summer break. Constanza Meléndez Tohá (*1983, Santiago, Chile) lives and works in Munich. She completed her studies at the University of Fine Arts at the Universidad de Chile, as well as at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Her artistic practice is rooted in photography; she explores the representation of the individual as a social entity through the mediums of documentary photography and storytelling. An important part of her artistic practice is collaborating with collectives and groups of artists such as »Plantage Dachau« with Beowulf Tomek and Caroline Kapp, as well as on the performance piece »Au au au Hi hi hi« with Angela Stiegler, Samuel Fischer-Glaser, Guida Miranda, Ieva Jakušonoka, and Daniel Door. She is also part of Palanca, a music project with visual artist and musician Daniel Door. Her work is currently on view at Galerie Françoise Heitsch in Munich (Location Havelstraße). Meléndez Tohá’s large-format analog prints push the photographer’s darkroom—a small, darkened, enclosed space—to its limits. Over the past few months, Meléndez Toháhas invited others on several occasions to join her in the process of analog photo development: in the basement of a museum (Museum Brandhorst), in a shipping container in the middle of a park (Der Fahrende Raum), and during a residency in the Bavarian Forest (Schiesslhaus AiR). At Kunstraum München, she will explore the theme of the darkroom in greater depth. Constanza Meléndez Tohà is invited by Angela Stiegler
