Daniel Jensen

Press release

Björkholmen Gallery is pleased to present Strange Behaviour by Daniel Jensen, the artist’s sixth solo exhibition at the gallery. Daniel Jensen primarily works with painting and sculpture. His painting has its origins in drawing and has, over the years, developed into an exploration of the possibilities and limitations of both painting and drawing. The process has become an increasingly important part of the work. By working with immediacy, primarily using different types of crayons and pencils, he seeks to capture the energy of a fleeting sketch. As his painting is fundamentally intuitive, Jensen works in a way that allows shifts and transformations of recurring forms and motifs to drive the process forward, to a visual language that moves between abstraction and figuration. In the titles of his works, the artist often weaves together personal observations with references to popular culture, literature, art and film. In this way, he creates a personal visual world that reflects, in different ways, on humanity and nature. Nature has long been a recurring thread throughout Jensen’s practice and also serves as a source of inspiration for the works in this exhibition. The paintings playfully function as fragmented descriptions of different kinds of natural non-places—somewhat like notes of memory that invite reflection rather than offer explanations. Daniel Jensen (b. 1972 in Malmö) lives and works in Stockholm. He is educated at The National Academy of Fine Art, Oslo and Valand School of Fine Art, Gothenburg. He has been exhibited extensively both in Sweden as well as internationally i.e Alzueta Gallery, Madrid and Barcelona, (ES), Gallery Monti8, Latina, (IT), Kant, Copenhagen (DK); The Dot Project, London (GB); Fifi Projects, Mexico City (MX); L21 Gallery, Palma de Mallorca (ES); Richard Heller Gallery, Los Angeles (US), Ronneby Konsthall, Ronneby (SE); Peter Bergman, Stockholm (SE). Jensen is represented in collections such as Malmö Art Museum (SE); The National Public Art Council of Sweden; Region Stockholm (SE); Investor AB (SE); Akzo Nobel Art Foundation, Amsterdam (NL); Steve Shane Collection, New York (US).
