Bernier/Eliades Gallery is pleased to present the first exhibition of Elina Belou, titled LIFE OF A SUNFLOWER. The opening will take place on Thursday, 1 October 2026, from 18:00 to 21:00, in the presence of the artist. Elina Belou (b. 1988) is a French ceramist, working between Athens and the south of France. Her practice explores sculpture through functionality and inherited ceramic traditions. Using artisanal pottery techniques learned during her travels in France, Finland, Portugal, Mexico, Japan, and Greece, she reinterprets the archetypal language of the vessel and reimagines the shapes of vases, pots, bowls, and boxes, shifting between the domestic and the ceremonial, utility and sculptural abstraction. This exhibition presents a moment within Belou's ongoing research, making, and experimentation in clay. The result of her practice is a series of contemporary objects evoking offerings, rituals, and altars, with an intentionally open-ended function that invites interpretation. The artist resists over-conceptualization, grounded in the belief that objects can exist without narrative justification. Instead, she conceives beauty as a legitimate subject of inquiry, guided by an acute sensitivity to precision, proportion, and balance, and by a search for timeless forms that bridge the archaic and the yet-to-come. Drawing on archaeological museums, ethnographic imagery, and anthropological literature, the artist approaches the vessel as an ancestral visual form that awakens in the viewer a deep, instinctive emotional response rooted in our shared cultural memory. Driven by intuition, atmosphere, and associations rather than predefined themes, Belou's practice unfolds through affinities, correspondences, and resonances between forms. Her works emerge as families of objects that enter into dialogue with one another, each responding to and enriching the presence of the others. Inspired by her childhood in the Pyrenees and by nature's enduring cycles, the changing seasons, vegetal growth, and shifting skies, Belou's practice explores processes of transformation through ceramics. She approaches the vessel as a living body, articulating necks, limbs, and curvilinear forms. She often incorporates flowers, branches, ash, local soils, and collected elements found during her wanderings in nature, in an attempt to capture the ephemeral. Rather than serving as mere decoration, ornaments become extensions of the vessel itself, reshaping and transforming its body. Through a continuous exploration of clay, glazes, and layered surfaces, she embraces irregularity, material unpredictability, and a quiet tactile elegance.
