Goen Choi & Hyeree Ro: Liberation Space

Press release
The Korean Pavilion will transform into a living monument, or so-called "Liberation Space." This concept references the three-year period immediately following Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule, and the project considers its evolution, continuity, and transnational potential amidst today's geopolitics. The concept was developed in the wake of South Korea's recent abrupt declaration of martial law and four months of nationwide impeachment rallies, leading the curatorial team to recall and reinvoke the possibilities opened in a prior period of liberation. Conceptualized as both "fortress" and "nest," the Korean Pavilion will host multiple additional voices and stories under the auspices of program "fellows" and a larger "network," expanding the Pavilion into an inclusive structure of ongoing dialogue and connection, care and solidarity. Curator: Binna Choi. Commissioner: ARKO (Arts Council Korea).
