Ever since man has been human, the artistic depiction of the human face has been the elementary reassurance of our being-in-the-world. In a self-portrait, it is an intimate encounter with ourselves; in a portrait, it is a dialog with a familiar or unfamiliar counterpart. This is where the exhibition begins. Starting with Lovis Corinth's Self-Portrait (1921), the first work in Achim Freyer's collection, artists from three generations come together in a multi-faceted selection.
