Press release

Curated by: Filipa da Rocha Nunes In the former ceramics factory that once stood on the site where Culturgest is located today, it is said that a single female worker was responsible for the final pigmentation of the clay pastes. She worked with great rigour to maintain the red tone of the bricks and roof tiles, achieved through a mixture of turmeric, dehydrated strawberry and plums, which she secretly sprinkled with rue and ground cinnamon to ward off the evil eye. It was common knowledge that this worker's task of "bringing the sky down to earth" ensured that all houses built with those materials enjoyed a mystical protection against the elements. In this exhibition, a group of Art works comes together in an exploration of how "the Heaven on Earth cannot wait", as the Portuguese poet Adília Lopes once wrote, and as the ceramics factory worker resolved on a daily basis. On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Caixa Geral de Depósitos, new additions to its Collection engage in a dialogue with the existing pieces, like characters in an epic narrative that begins with the identification of a problem, moves through a growing conflict, and culminates in the discovery of possible solutions.
