The exhibition "Shy as a Shadow" presents paintings and sculptures that explore questions surrounding the acts of revealing, concealing, evading, withdrawing, and what lies in between. While some works physically draw viewers into the picture plane, others block access and challenge the viewer’s own position in the space. Through painterly gestures and material breaks, approaches to the content are either facilitated or denied from the outset. Navigating the space between invitation and obstruction, the exhibited works explore the question of which spaces in painting can be opened and closed.

The exhibition’s title is derived from the painting of the same name, "Shy as a shadow," by the artist Andrew Cranston.
