Press release

Haus am Lützowplatz (HaL) is presenting a solo exhibition by US artist Tracey Snelling (*1970 in Oakland, CA).

In her sculptures of existing buildings, the artist examines the social relationships of the individuals living in them. The objects are staged with light and sound effects, while video clips are shown on built-in monitors. Tracey Snelling’s sculptures and installations refer to the complexity of a world in which images are omnipresent and interchangeable and in which fictions increasingly overlap and merge with reality.

The project at HaL is be the most comprehensive exhibition to date of the well-traveled and internationally renowned artist in her adopted home city, reflecting her residencies in New Orleans (2018), Shanghai (2018-19), Paris (2020), Ann Arbor/Michigan (2022) and Tokyo (2022).

One unifying element of the sculptures in the „How We Live“ exhibition is the theme of social housing, i.e. state-subsidized construction projects and the associated social issues. For the „Haus am Lützowplatz“ art association, the „How We Live“ project is directly related to a socially linked construction project on the site of the former parking lot, which will be realized from spring 2025 after a planning phase lasting several years. A permanent exhibition about this project was set up in the HaL Studiogalerie in February 2024.
