Press release
A wyrwa is a place where something once was – something that was part of something larger, something it belonged to. A wyrwa is an empty space, a void, but a void left behind by something. To wyrwać is to pull something out, but with damage or pain. I can even say wyrwa is a feeling. The feeling caused by a memory of something very close even if it wasn't particularly good or beautiful. Even if it wasn't beautiful at all. Wyrwa is an exhibition of new works by Joanna Piotrowska that rove uneven terrains of memory, fractured and refracted, lucid and overgrown. These new series’, mounted in bespoke steel, aluminium and glass frameworks, comprise images made over the summer in the town where Piotrowska grew up; childhood drawings and ephemera; and close-cropped fragments from her father’s negatives tucked behind sunset-tinted glass. Very special thanks to Sebastian Edge at North London Darkroom; Phil Brown at Other People’s Sculpture; Jonny Lyons; Jochen Holz; Giancarlo Leggio at DiSé; David Stearn.
