Kasko
Press release
The Kaskadenkondensator remains a space for contemporary art and performance. What is new, however, is that "mediation"—which has always been an integral part of the program—is now officially part of the "new" name: KASKO – Space for Contemporary Art, Performance, and Mediation.
KASKO sees itself as a site for mediation and experimental, research-based, and process-oriented artistic creation, with an emphasis on the independence of projects.
As a complementary art venue, KASKO plays an independent role within the context of Basel's art institutions. It functions as a flexible structure where artists and theorists work together at the intersection of art and mediation, stimulating dialogue between creators and those interested in art. A central objective is to grant freedom to artists and art mediators, thereby supporting their development. Furthermore, KASKO seeks and maintains networks and collaborations with urban and regional initiatives and institutions, as well as with other independent art spaces both at home and abroad. The space itself is available to artists and mediators as an open room for experimentation. At the same time, KASKO stands for a solid and sustainable artistic program with a strong focus on performance and other performative forms of expression.
History & Structure
KASKO (The Kaskadenkondensator) has existed since 1994. It is organized as an association and, being independent both in content and finances, forms its own microcosm within the Werkraum Warteck pp.
Since its founding, it has been managed by various teams (see archive), most recently by Chris Regn.
KASKO – Space for Contemporary Art, Performance, and Mediation
These three focus areas are reflected in the new management of KASKO. As of 2021, longtime curator Chris Regn handed over the leadership to artist and curator Lysann König. The latter is supported by a "core team" of 12 people—artists, performers, and art mediators—some of whom bring several years of practical experience to the table.
Together, the new team developed an exhibition program and a fresh identity, both digital and analog. In addition to its own events and "docking" projects, KASKO regularly hosts guest projects from all disciplines, resulting in a rich annual program.
The website features a new design, and the space was renovated throughout 2021. Additionally, parts of the infrastructure are being updated.
Our Values
It is a great priority for us to preserve the long-standing ideals of the space.
Innovation: A focus on exchange, experimentation, and interest in new or renewable formats.
Awareness: A focus on mindfulness toward our fellow human beings and what is (or isn't) happening in the scene, exchange across all sectors, and the promotion of those who have yet to receive significant support.
Inclusivity: KASKO is a cross-disciplinary space; supporting artists and groups in the realization of their ideas and projects is close to our hearts.
KASKO is also a place for friendships and an entry point into the Basel art scene. In this sense, it aims to be a space that is as barrier-free as possible—a space with flat hierarchies, a feminist character*, and a desire to promote cultural participation for an inclusive audience.
KASKO is part of ∑-Summe and is networked via and with A Roland for an Oliver.
The space is wheelchair accessible. Everybody welcome! No sexism, no racism, no homophobia or transphobia!
