Michal Budny

Press release

For the seventh exhibition with annex14 gallery, Michał Budny (1976, PL) has developed five small works that respond in different ways to the special situation of the small room in the historic Linck House. The cardboard works have different titles that refer to aspects of everyday life.

On one hand the silver paint dematerialise the precise forms and the light cardboard takes on an ephemeral character that plays with the backlight of the large window. On the other hand, the surface appears metallic, precise and valuable, although this impression is cancelled by the slight imperfection of the glued seams and edges. The dimensions of the works are based on the measurements of the window divisions and thus refer to the location.

The exhibition title - "Keyhole" - also refers to the special location of the small, enchanted room in the garden above the River Aare. It reflects the secret, hidden nature of the location, but also expresses the curiosity that the unusual installation arouses.

With the material and the model-like character of the works, Michał Budny makes reference to works from 2006/2007, which referred to architectural situations on various scales, including a 1:1 model of his living room and study at the time, in which the wall sections with furniture were cut out. The new objects take up the material and paint again, but are now dedicated to the changing relationships between the bodies. They thus increasingly work with spatial formations, some of which take on a sculptural character, but are also reminiscent of the emotional components of relationships.
