Duane Linklater
Press release
In this exhibition, Duane Linklater explores the conventions of museums within the broader context of contemporary and historical living conditions of Indigenous peoples. The artist not only references the preservation practices inherited from his ancestors but also critically engages with the violent knowledge, representation, and value systems imposed by settler colonialism. For his exhibition at the Secession, Linklater has developed a site-specific modular structure centered around the concept of 'cache.' A cache is a collection or assemblage of things. By linking personal collections—mementos and small objects we accumulate throughout life and display in our homes—with the larger complex of the museum and its colonial underbelly, this concept draws attention to the complex narratives intertwined with the circulation and preservation of not only objects but also feelings, memories, and ideas.
