Signs and Echoes

Artists

Mikkel Ørsted

Press release

In the solo exhibition _Signs and Echoes_, artist Mikkel Ørsted presents a new series of monotypes alongside large-scale ceramic sculptures - two distinct bodies of work that both mirror and challenge each other. The towering ceramics dominate the space, impressive in both height, mass and balance, while the monotypes appear ethereal, flickering and impressionistic. Each piece bears the unmistakable traces of Ørsted’s signature symbols and ornamental vocabulary. In recent years, Ørsted has pushed the boundaries of ceramic art through his monumental, unconventionally glazed sculptures. This exhibition is no exception. The sculptures, which premiered at Viborg Kunsthal in 2024, are constructed from more than a hundred individually fired and decorated clay panels and elements, built on iron frames that reach upward like whimsical, towering tile stoves. Ørsted moves effortlessly through the traditions of ceramic history: classical blue-and-white floral motifs connect with crackled glazes in bubblegum pink. These visual contrasts challenge aesthetic conventions and hierarchies, and the works seem unbound by gravity or the limits of clay.
