Press release

Morten Knudsen, "Real Hearts", 2026, exhibition view, Gauli Zitter, Brussels If you visited this gallery two years ago you'd have seen similar art. The exhibition back then was titled "Real Heart". This is now "Real Hearts". MORTEN KNUDSEN has somehow repeated: two highly textured paintings with lots of impasto, depicting a patch of bushes and flowers. The symbolist palette steering toward fauvistic anti-naturalism. We show this again as we were not explicit on how these paintings originate. An argument is to be made that what Knudsen is really interested in is sculpture and signs. Key are these works you didn't see two years ago: a big letter E which stands for everything. These are heavy objects that play with volume, like sculpture. The materials are foam board, cardboard, wood, nails, and plexiglass. We don't see paint and canvas. And then you have the big pictures. They are symbolic rather than symbolistic. You're tricked into thinking it's a depiction of nature, a pretty one even. It's closer to building blocks from the sculpting work coagulated on a solid surface, loaded with signs like the dots, the lines, the commas, disguised as plants. Like the Es, they stand for everything. Flowers and oil paint in 2026: There must be something else.
