OnCurating Project Space
Press release
OnCurating Project Space is interested in art as a practice and social criticism, less in a traditional understanding of art objects. As a kind of meta-practice, a curatorial attitude plays with various disciplines and brings them into the presentation space of art, questioning society, politics, public life and the private sphere. The OnCurating Space members understand the curatorial as a multi-authored approach to the production of meaning which is intrinsically linked to transformations of contemporary societies, the reorganization of labour, cultural policies, politics of inclusion/exclusion and issues poised by points of intersection.
The OnCurating Project Space focuses on „race“, class, gender politics, and related migration movements, post-democracy, infrastructural changes, digital space and its repercussions on society. The new space in Zurich wants to open a platform for new formats between curating, contemporary art, activism, theory, performance, music. We understand visual cultures as an ensemble of processes of forming the social space of a society. Contemporary art, curating and cultural analysis are ideally understood here as theory of a practice and practice of a theory. We see curating as an elevated meta-discourse, which enables new, freer ways of producing meaning, but also requires constant critical reflection. The space is supported by the registered association OnCurating.org, by filmmakers and curators with the declared aim of facilitating a non-university practice, a transit space that allows an expanded network to emerge through cooperation with local, national and international projects and partners. At the same time, the proximity to Zurich artists in the Visarte studio building creates an important anchorage in the Zurich art scene. In analogy to the shared space in Netz, which OnCurating provides as a discursive collaborative space with various actors, OnCurating Project Space also sees itself as a space of possibility that is open for cooperation and at the same time is based on a critical curatorial approach.
