Press release
José Carlos Martinat (b. 1974, Lima, Peru) presents "Ruinophilie," a compelling exhibition unveiling the multifaceted identity of the Latin American urban landscape. This Parisian showcase exemplifies Martinat's signature multidisciplinary practice, which transcends the boundaries of traditional media. Here, he presents a powerful composition comprised of three distinct "wall extractions."
Martinat's artistic vision isn't merely concerned with aesthetics; it delves into the very essence of Latin America, its social, cultural, and political narratives. His unique technique involves meticulously extracting layers of graffiti from the weathered surfaces of South American walls. These extracted fragments, imbued with the raw energy and character of their origin, become the foundation for his thought-provoking works. They function as a palimpsest, a layered record of human expression and urban transformation.
Martinat's artistic process is more than just extraction; it's a form of critical appropriation. With a discerning eye, he isolates logos, letters, and phrases that resonate with the political pulse of the region. These potent symbols, alongside captivating iconography reflective of the urban environment, are meticulously reconstructed. Juxtaposed and recomposed, they transcend their individual narratives, forming a powerful visual language that speaks volumes about the sociopolitical realities of the region.
