For the eighth edition of the Furla Series, the Furla Foundation and GAM - Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Milano announce a solo exhibition by Shilpa Gupta, curated by Bruna Roccasalva. Among the most influential voices in international contemporary art, Shilpa Gupta explores themes such as language, censorship, mobility, and the structures that shape individual identity and freedom. Through a multidisciplinary practice that spans sculpture, light installations, video, sound, and performance, Gupta weaves dialogues between languages ​​and territories, between singularity and collectivity, intimacy and the public sphere. The exhibition presents a series of new works conceived specifically for the museum spaces and summarizes the constituent elements of Gupta's work, offering a glimpse into the research the artist has been carrying out for over twenty years. Shilpa Gupta's exhibition is part of the multi-year partnership between Fondazione Furla and GAM - Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Milano, which since 2021 has presented an annual project aimed at establishing a dialogue between contemporary art and the museum's historic spaces and permanent collection. Since 2017, the Furla Series has seen the Furla Foundation organize exhibitions in collaboration with leading Italian art institutions, featuring an all-female program designed to highlight and highlight the fundamental contribution of women to contemporary culture. Shilpa Gupta (born 1976) lives and works in Mumbai, India, where she studied sculpture at the Sir JJ School of Fine Arts from 1992 to 1997. He has held solo exhibitions at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, the Centro Botín in Santander, the Arnolfini in Bristol, the OK in Linz, the Museum voor Moderne Kunst in Arnhem, the Amant in New York, the Voorlinden Museum and Gardens in Wassenaar, the Barbican in London, and the Lalit Kala Akademi in New Delhi, among others. In 2023, he held a double solo exhibition with Marisa Merz at the MAXXI in L'Aquila, and in 2021, a retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp. Shilpa Gupta has participated in numerous international exhibitions such as the 58th Venice Biennale (2019), the Kochi Muziris Biennale (2018), the Gothenburg Biennale (2017), the Berlin Biennale (2014), the New Museum Triennial (2009), the Sharjah Biennale (2013), the Lyon Biennale (2009), the Gwangju Biennale (2008), the Yokohama Triennial (2008), the Liverpool Biennial (2006). She has also exhibited at biennials in Auckland, Melbourne, Seoul, Havana, Sydney, Yogyakarta, Echigo-Tsumari, Shanghai, Houston and others. His works are part of important collections including: Tate Modern, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Center Pompidou, Louisiana Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art of Chicago, National Gallery of Canada, ZKM, Voorlinden Museum, Mori Museum, M+ Museum, Astrup Fearnley Museum, KOC Collection, National Gallery of Victoria, Ishara Art Foundation, Jameel Arts Center, Burger Collection, Kiran Nadar Museum and Devi Art Foundation. His solo exhibition What Still Holds is currently on view at the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin.
