Soliloquy
Artists
Adam Lupton
Press release
At first glance the artist seems to be omnipresent. The lonesome, melancholic figure appearing in many of the exhibition’s paintings may look like an image of himself, but is rather a psychological reference, different versions of him. It is striking that this person is always alone, an issue that preoccupies the artist. Throughout the work repeated and competing narratives expand and intersect, evoking questions of that loneliness and isolation in modern society, identity, masculinity, domesticity, and mental health.
The artist draws from his OCD, where mental and physical rituals, repeating mantras and projections make up his every day. In a very poignant manner, he manages to connect his personal experiences with the pervasive anxieties of our society, and the permanent striving for certainty and perfection.
