Press release

Associazione Barriera invites eastcontemporary to present a group exhibition “Stories we carry” during the next edition of Colazione a Barriera.

Storytelling is an intrinsic part of human culture, shaping identities, histories, and collective memories. “Stories we carry” brings together works by Andrius Arutiunian, Nikita Kadan, Aziza Kadyri, Mila Panić, Ala Savashevich, Slavs and Tatars, and Anastasia Sosunova to explore contemporary practices rooted in narrative. Through installations, sculptures, and multimedia works, the exhibition reflects on how stories are preserved, fragmented, and reimagined across time and space, weaving together themes of oral histories and folklore, language and translation, memory and identity, and the politics of representation.

Conceived as a culmination of the last years of programming at eastcontemporary, the exhibition reflects the gallery’s mission to foster cross-cultural dialogue and to champion emerging and established voices, particularly from Central and Eastern Europe and other regions shaped by the legacy of the former Soviet Union.

As a collateral event, the exhibition features ARMEN, a performance by Armenian-Lithuanian artist Andrius Arutiunian, who invites the audience on a car journey through Turin while listening to a cassette composed by the artist, featuring samples of disco music from the Armenian diaspora. Blurring the lines between concert, road trip, and sound archive, the performance reflects on diasporic memory, collective experience, and the circulation of cultural forms across geographies.

Thanks to the support of Lithuanian Culture Institute and eastcontemporary, this will be the first iteration of the work in Italy, following presentations at the Kadist Foundation in Paris (2024) and the 15th Baltic Triennial (2025).
