Press release
Thomas Schütte (b. 1954) is one of the most internationally significant artists of our time Following a series of highly acclaimed solo exhibitions, including at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen is dedicating a comprehensive exhibition to him, produced in close collaboration with the Düsseldorf-based artist. Schütte’s work is characterized by a critical and often ironic examination of humanity, society, and power. He works in various media, including sculpture, watercolor, painting, ceramics, installations, and models. In addition to his larger-than-life sculptures, such as Vater Staat (Father State) and Mutter Erde (Mother Earth), the exhibition features never-before-seen works straight from the foundry. It also presents the first comprehensive overview of the artist’s architectural models. The show offers a new perspective on Thomas Schütte’s extraordinarily diverse oeuvre and demonstrates how he questions the familiar in order to offer new proposals for the present and the future.
