Press release
Louise Bourgeois' "Untitled" series, created between 1998 and 2014, represents a significant shift in her artistic practice as she moved away from traditional materials like wood, bronze, and fabric to explore the innovative medium of holography. The series, consisting of eight holograms, was born out of a collaboration with C-Project, a New York-based studio known for pushing the boundaries of three-dimensional art. This venture, though short-lived, provided Bourgeois with the opportunity to translate her dioramas—featuring miniature chairs and mirrored backgrounds—into the holographic medium.
The resulting holograms, each measuring approximately 11 x 14 inches, create eerie, self-contained worlds that blend childlike wonder with a sense of slapstick horror reminiscent of vintage sci-fi films. Key elements like miniature chairs, a bell jar, and disembodied feet on a dollhouse-sized bed evoke the psychological depth and playful satire characteristic of Bourgeois’ work. The holograms’ saturated red color enhances their haunting quality, while the use of laser technology to produce these images lends them an almost spectral presence.
This series invites viewers into a new, almost magical dimension, where Bourgeois' signature themes of psychological tension and surreal imagery are given fresh life in a medium that combines innovation with a deep sense of unease.
