Artists
Vlassis Caniaris
Press release
Opening: Thursday, 20 March, 2025, 6 - 8 pm
With a talk between Dr. Michael Fehr, curator and author (creator of the catalog raisonné: Vlassis Caniaris 1952-1983), and Ioanna Irini Caniaris, the daughter of the artist, moderated by Peter Kilchmann, 6:30 pm
Galerie Peter Kilchmann is pleased to present its third solo exhibition dedicated to Vlassis Caniaris (1928-2011), which also marks the first major retrospective in France since his passing. The artist had a special connection to Paris, where he lived twice with his family, from 1960 to 1966 and again from 1969 to 1976. In 1970, he was granted a solo exhibition at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
This presentation brings together sculptures, assemblages, installations, and works on paper created between 1962 and 1980 during his stays in Paris, Berlin, and Athens. It highlights key stages of his artistic journey and the evolution of his work, addressing themes such as the questioning of the economic miracle, resistance to the aftermath of the military coup in Greece, and issues related to migration and guest workers in Germany.
