Press release

Jonas Fahrenberger bases his art on the existing, not the imagined. It is the material circumstances of life that shape people, their characters and their coexistence. At the heart of Marx's critical materialism is a critique of the idealism of his time. Fahrenberger updates this criticism by searching reality for images that could not be in greater contrast to the kitschy to the point of reactionary outpourings that are currently being celebrated again in major exhibitions, for example in parts of the main exhibition of the Venice Biennale.

Jonas Fahrenberger's new works follow in the footsteps of civility and the status quo it defends. In times when people are discussing what "leading culture" is, while one crisis follows the next, the question inevitably arises: what is happening here and what is meant by a "normal life"? It's about the search for happiness, hope and disappointment; about repression, fears or the Sunday Tatort. Fahrenberger navigates through individual fictional characters whose statements, homes and appearances you have likely encountered countless times before. They are the neighbors, the uncles and aunts, the colleagues. They are the ones who wait.
